Daniel Owen of Oval Office 2008 points out:

Brownback described himself as a “full scale conservative” (AP in the Washington Post). You can discover for yourself what that means at Brownback’s exploratory committee website.

The ranks high on my list of memes that we’ll hear a lot of in the 2008 primary. “Full scale conservative” is a powerful phrase. It conveys Brownback’s commitment to movement conservatism and not some sort of watered-down, Johnny Come Lately conservatism that one might see in other GOP contenders. It conveys forcefulness and dedication — themes that extend beyond ideology to suggest personal qualities that GOP voters want to see, particularly as it relates to how the next president carries on the Iraq war.

Full scale conservative could be to 2008 what compassionate conservative was to 2000. At least, that’s what I bet Brownback’s messaging consultants are hoping.

What kind of “full scale conservative” votes for the McCain-Kennedy immigration bill?

Since when do actions supersede narrative? Full scale conservative is a narrative, and a powerful one at that. Votes are little things that few people beyond Bob Geiger care about.

Something to say?
