Jonathan Singer lists the Democratic numbers from the KCCI poll and below are the Republican numbers for Iowa 2008. The methodology is a little screwy since polling for caucus goers is more art than science and KCCI seems to have dropped a party ID poll. Thus their general election numbers are actually probably more accurate than their primary numbers.
It’s not really a baseline but it’s interesting nonetheless. Having said that McCain is outperforming in Iowa, Brownback is way under-performing and Romney may be outperforming or under-performing depending on whether he’s imploded yet or not. Giuliani won’t win the Republican primary but his numbers are an enigma to me though probably too high. The million dollar question is if they’ve polled Duncan Hunter why haven’t they polled Tancredo or Huckabee?
I’ll have much more on the Iowa Republican caucuses – which are nothing like the Democratic caucuses in the future.
QUESTION: If the 2008 Republican Caucus for President were held today, which of the following candidates would you vote for? (ROTATED):
John McCain 27%
Rudy Giuliani 26%
Mitt Romney 9%
Newt Gingrich 7%
Condi Rice 4%
George Pataki 1%
Jeb Bush 1%
George Allen 1%
Sam Brownback 1%
Rick Santorum 1%
Duncan Hunter -
Undecided 22%

Let me see here. So Rice is one of the most famous people in politics. Rice is extremly smart (obviously her policies are all wrong but that’s because she wants different things than we do – you know, like perpetual war). Yet the Repubican base is still so racist and sexist that they don’t support her?
Even unknown Mitt Romney polls higher than Rice?
Wild.
What does that say about their base.

[...] Rudy Giuliani’s appeal as a Republican presidential candidate resides solely in his celebrity following the 9/11/01 terrorist attacks on New York. He was declared “America’s Mayor” and went on take up extremely strong positions advocating the war in Iraq and unconditional support for Israel. Giuliani’s strong showings in early Iowa and New Hampshire polls must be attributed to his popularity following 9/11 and not, say, his pro-choice stance on abortion. It’s not surprising that Giuliani is now reaching out to family members of victims of the September 11th attacks to endorse his presidential campaign. Supporters of former Mayor Rudy Giuliani have started discussions with relatives of 9/11 victims about backing him if he runs for president in 2008, some family members told The Post. [...]

Something to say?

More importantly, why do they have two people who aren’t running any more(Allen, Santorum) and two people that are purely fantasy candidates (Rice, Bush)?
