TechnoMetrica Market Intelligence conducted the first general election polling of the new year. The sample size is 951 adults nationwide from January 2nd through the 4th with a margin of error at ±3.

Republicans John McCain (AZ) and Rudy Giuliani (NY) polled ahead of all three Democratic front-runners — Hillary Clinton (NY), Barack Obama (IL) and John Edwards (NC) — with slim margins.

Mitt Romney (R-MA), however, did not even come close and never broke past 35 percent. He had an abysmal 29 percent showing against Edwards. In that head-to-head poll, Edwards garnered 53 percent and was the only candidate to break the half-way mark among all six.
