Via Howie Klein, Senator Wayne Allard of Colorado is not going to seek reelection in 2008. Tom Tancredo has been rumored to want Allard’s seat, though he recently encouraged Allard to run for reelection and save the GOP from having a primary fight for an open seat. If Tancredo thinks he can’t win the Bill Cutting Vote from Duncan Hunter and will have an easier path trying to replace Allard in the Senate, he may back out of the presidential race and pursue a senate run.
According to Klein, via email, Tancredo will likely be in competition with former Congressmen Scott McInnis and Bob Schaffer. Governor Bill Owens may toss his hat in the ring too, though McInnis sounds the most definite:
But if Allard declines, “I certainly would, under those circumstances, take a very close look at it,” McInnis said.
Obviously this will play out over the next couple of months. Tancredo will have a tough time winning a statewide race in Colorado – he’s just too reactionary – but he’s more likely to end up the GOP nominee for senate than the GOP nominee for president. Running for Allard’s seat is more likely to keep his career alive than a quixotic run for president.

[...] Updated below Contra my earlier post on Tancredo’s interest in the Colorado Senate seat, Tancredo will be announcing a decision about whether or not he’s running for president today. From the Des Moines Register: Tancredo said he will decide today whether he will run. No Republican has yet announced intentions to run for the presidential nomination. [...]
Something to say?
