Rudy Giuliani gave a speech on leadership in Sarasota, Florida yesterday. The Bradenton Herald article on the appearance makes clear that Giuliani’s post-9/11 resume is pretty much all he has to run on. Speaking of leadership, Giuliani talked about his strong support for President Bush.
“I’m a big supporter of the president,” Giuliani said. “He has the quality of setting goals and sticking to them.”
I’m not sure how that statement meshes with the Giuliani Hexagon of Leadership Skillz, particularly vis a vis teamwork and communication:
The six principles Rudy Giuliani said are necessary to make a good leader:
• You have to have a set of beliefs.
• You have to be an optimist.
• You have to have courage.
• You have to take risks, but prepare for them.
• You have to develop teamwork.
• You have to communicate.
Giuliani’s closest tie to Bush is September 11th. He has continually supported every military endeavor Bush has proposed, tying them all to the necessities of a post-9/11 world. Giuliani doesn’t talk about Iraq without tying it to 9/11 (eg, “He said Bush made the biggest decision of his presidency after the [9/11] attacks, “to go on the offensive against terrorism,” and said going to Iraq was part of that strategy.”). Except Iraq had no connection to the September 11th attacks and the American people know that.
Giuliani’s main selling point is his experience in terrorism. But if he’s going to market himself as another Bush, a man cut from Bush’s cloth, then he’s clearly missing the tenor of the national debate in opposition to Bush’s handling of national security.
