The roster of candidates for the Republican nomination in 2008 just grew longer. Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee will form an exploratory committee on Monday, reports the Associated Press.

Huckabee, a “fierce foe of abortion rights and gay marriage,” will join a large pool of “conservative” candidates, including Senator Sam Brownback (KS) and Congressman Duncan Hunter (CA). Both of whom vowed to overturn Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision in 1973 that legalized abortions in the United States.

The former governor will be on Sunday’s Meet the Press on NBC to “discuss his ‘future plans.’” (Hat tip: Mike Huckabee President 2008)

Huckabee’s decision will make him the eleventh Republican to either explore a possible presidential bid, or declare. With Senator Joe Biden (D-Delaware) expected to file the necessary paperwork with the Federal Election Committee (FEC) before the month is out, there are 20 candidates between the two major parties.

(The twenty figure reflects the attitude of the press — probably by choice and not an accident.)
