Mitt Romney launched a fire-storm today by announcing his decision to announce his presidential candidacy at the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit. Ford was a legendary anti-Semite and Romney’s decision has already sparked condemnation by the National Jewish Democratic Council. Romney’s decision is in the tradition of Ronald Reagan’s announcement of his candidacy in Philadelphia, Mississippi, where three civil rights activists were murdered. Reagan’s announcement was seen as a signal flair to the white, conservative base in the South; who is Romney trying to reach by announcing at a museum honoring one of America’s most notable anti-Semites?
Aaron Banks of NDNBlog asks:
Also, remember that Henry Ford was outspokenly anti-immigrant, as well as anti-semetic, saying: “These men of many nations must be taught American ways, the English language, and the right way to live.” Immigration is of course a major issue facing Congress and the 2008 Presidential candidates. And I’m not holding my breath, but shouldn’t a reporter at the annoucement ask Romney or a senior staff member if the former Governor of Massachusetts agrees with Henry Ford’s views on immigration?
Romney’s decision is utterly perplexing and highly disturbing.

[...] Unfortunately, for him, he’s gotten a surprisingly negative spate of news over the past day. First, Sam Brownback slams Mitt’s “multiple choice” abortion positions, then Chris Cillizza twists the knife on the front page of the Washington Post by saying that Mitt “has reversed [his abortion and stem cell positions] since it became clear he would pursue the presidency in 2008,” and for good measure, World Net Daily piles on too. If that weren’t enough, there were the anti-Romney protesters at this weekend’s GOP convention in Michigan. Now comes word that the National Jewish Democratic Council took Romney to task for giving his announcement speech at the Henry Ford Museum, given Ford’s despicable anti-Semitism (What was Romney thinking?!). To top it off, some Romney supporters in Michigan have decided to defect to John McCain’s campaign, because they found Romney’s past positions unsatisfying (and to add insult to injury, Fox even includes a link to the infamous Romney-Kennedy ‘94 debate).
