Mitt Romney takes on a Christian heckler who called him a religious “pretender“:

One of the great things about this great land is we have people of different faiths and different persuasions. And I’m convinced that the nation does need to have people of different faiths, but we need to have a person of faith lead the country.

The heckler prefaced his heckle by noting that he wanted a follower of Christ in the Oval Office and that Romney’s Mormonism disqualified him as a real Christian. So even while Romney sounds like he’s speaking to all of religious America when he says “we need to have a person of faith lead the country,” he’ s going to remain disqualified in the minds of many, many Americans because of his Mormonism. Twenty-four percent of Americans would not vote for a Mormon for president and only 58% would be comfortable voting for a Mormon, a number that is far smaller than other ground-breaking demographics in the field. Romney’s challenge will be to convince Americans that he is not a “pretender” and that Mormonism is a true faith. Validating an entire religion in the eyes of the American public is a hell of big burden for someone to carry while running for president.
