Congressman Ron Paul’s (R-Surfside, Tex.) presidential exploratory committee website is finally finished. Though a bit bare, it is a step up from the desolate place he called home in recent weeks.

Updated 2/20/07, 3:44pm [by Matt Ortega]: The website has pictures! See him hugging an elderly woman, smiling to a group of young children, and his best Ronald Reagan photo-op recreation. (See Reagan here.)

For what it’s worth, I think we’re a bunch of assholes. The guy’s trying…

Paul certainly has my respect for launching a “long shot bid” based on his principles. (Of which, I disagree with him on a lot of issues.) But nonetheless, respect him, especially since, by all accounts, he is a man of principle and stands by it.

I’d vote for Ron Paul; I’d vote for Chuck Hagel. I’m not sure that I’d vote for any of the “first-tier” Republican candidates unless the choice was between one of them and Kodos (or Kang).

Andy – are you an anti-war Republican?

Paul and Hagel will fight for the same demographic if Hagel enters the race. If not, I think Paul might be able to crowbar his success with online social networking sites into a wider platform based around grassroots support of anti-war Republicans and libertarians. I don’t know how far that break can take him, but it looks like it might be held up long enough to get him some attention.

Yes, I am anti-war; no, I am not a Republican (I am officially registered as a Libertarian). I agree that there would be some demographic overlap for Paul and Hagel because of the war. At the same time, I think that there are some differences in philosophy between the two men that would play out at least in their emphases if not their actual positions on certain issues, and at this point Hagel seems to me to be the more “serious” candidate (assuming that he runs). So, I’m backing Hagel, but I’d like to see Paul mixing it up because I think he has a message that’s worth being heard by as many Americans as possible. Plus, if it ended up being something like Clinton vs. McCain in the general election then I would strongly consider voting for Paul if the Libertarians were somehow able to grab him.

Then how about Matt Ortega shows some respect for John Cox who is running a similar camp.?

Similar how? In that they both have websites? Give me a break.

Paul is one of the longest serving members of the House.

Cox has never won an election. And we all know that he’s tried for house, senate, and cook county recorder of deeds. In that order.

John Cox deserves the respect. What you people do not understand is that all presidential candidates deserve a voice.

Prime example, you all talk about how MySpace.com is playing a vital role in this campaign, but which candidate has more “friends” then Rudy, Brownback and Huckabee?-The other candidate Michael Smith. But is his message heard? not a chance

You think that only people who have millions of dollars and have served in government office deserve the time of day.

In my mind maybe if you haven’t served in places where corruption runs rampant, you cant possibly be corrupt. That why I am working on the Cox 2008 campaign because this isn’t time to be served Career Politicians it is time for some Career Leaders, which John Cox has showed that he is a leader by his work in the private sector.

What you need to keep in mind is that this is America and we elect those who we see will fulfill the job at hand, and in my opinion John Cox is who America needs!

Colton,
It’s not about what Cox “deserves.” It’s about what he will get.

I agree with you whole-heartedly that, in principle, any person seriously committed to running for president should be given a space to talk to the country about what they want. That’s why I want to see fully publicly financed campaigns, so everyone has a say and the dialogue isn’t dominated by the big ticket politicians.

But that’s not where we are now and as such I have to discount Cox’s candidacy. I’d love to hear what he has to say, but if I know that he’s whispering amidst a cacophony, I’m not going to strain to listen. I don’t have that luxury.

Keep it up though – you’re belief in Cox is admirable. Let us know if I can post on any major media pieces on Cox and I happily will.

I agree, as well, that all candidates should have a voice.

This isn’t about money. I don’t like that elections are getting more and more expensive. The more money that is thrown around in elections, inevitably, makes government less effective for the people of this country because the loyalties of the elected official move closer to the special interests instead of where it is suppose to lie: the people.

However, in Cox’s case, he has zero experience as an elected official. No legislative record, nothing to look at to size up how he would govern.

If he had experience as a state legislator on up, I would be a lot more willing to take his candidacy seriously but I’m sorry, at this point, personally, I don’t.

“However, in Cox’s case, he has zero experience as an elected official. No legislative record, nothing to look at to size up how he would govern.”

We view it as a positive that he isn’t a career politician. John Cox has the money himself to make some noise, but I hope that after this election he moves out of Chicago and runs for senate or house.

John Cox is the only real Conservative out there running for president, and if people see that in time, John Cox could raise some eyebrows.

Colton, you keep saying that Cox is the “only real conservative,” but I hear the same thing from a dozen other self-described “Reagan Republicans,” “true conservatives,” “Valley Forge Republicans,” “full-scale conservatives,” etc.

Explain to me what makes him stand out from the other candidates. (Aside from never actually being in government buildings as anything other than a visitor.)

John Cox is the only candidate out there who has made his plans and views on all issue’s public.

John Cox is dedicated to the reduction of government spending and reforming the way Washington works. He believes in reigning in an out-of-control federal government. He also advocates passing the Balanced Budget Amendment to the Federal Constitution and a line item veto.

He understands we cannot reward those who break our nation’s laws and that we also shouldn’t create a permanent underclass in our country. He’ll say no to amnesty and to a guest worker program. He’s 100% pro-life and pro-family.

He’s not a part of the political establishment. Both sides have created a mess, and I believe electing an outsider like Mr. Cox can be key to cleaning it up.

I’m not going to claim that John Cox will have a cakewalk to the Presidency, or even that he’ll win. Unlike other political commentators, I make no claim as a clairvoyant. I don’t know what will happen in the next fifteen months or so. All I know to do is to support the candidate who best represents my values and beliefs, while leaving the results in the Hands of God.

Something to say?
