Updated 3/1/07, 8:56pm [by Matt Ortega]: According to The State, anonymous mailings were sent around criticizing former Governor Mitt Romney (R-Massachusetts) on the eve of the straw poll.
A second piece was sent via electronic mail from the address “upstaterepublican@gmail.com.” It said it was from “Martin W.” and attacked Romney’s faith.
The e-mail is headlined: “Mitt Romney has a family secret he doesn’t want you to know.”
It says: “Those dark suspicions you hide deep inside yourself about Mormonism are trying to tell you something. Trust your instincts! æ.æ.æ. The light of truth will burn through the smoke and mirrors of Mitt Romney’s movie star looks and crafty words!”
The e-mail includes a copy of a recent Associated Press story about how Romney’s ancestors practiced polygamy.
South Carolina’s The Shot political website has more. SCHotline has pieces attacking former Governor Mike Huckabee. (Does the anonymous mailer have a vendetta against Governors?)

It’s been interesting reading the freeper reaction to the results…many are claiming that the placements of giuliani and hunter are a demonstration of conservative netroots’ emerging influence.
Thanks for the link, Matt. I don’t know what the results mean yet, but Spartanburg is far and away one of SC’s most conservative counties. It probably only means who was most popular last night.

[...] Spartanburg (S.C.) Straw Poll Results Thread [...]
What a crock this attention to the poll is…it’s completely meaningless. Alan Keyes won an Alabama straw poll in 2004 with something like 55% of the votes…I think he got 1% to 2% in the primary states that he actually qualified for!
The attacks on Romney are shameful. He’s the only viable conservative. And questioning his stance on abortion now is asinine. People forget that Ronald Reagan once signed a bill in California liberalizing abortion laws pre-Roe v. Wade. He had a change of heart and went on to author a great essay/book that is still at the heart of the pro-life movement.
Romney is the only chance to defeat the RINO’s.
[...] In a follow-up to the results thread from Thursday, Senator John McCain (R-Arizona) edged out former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani in the Spartanburg, S.C. Straw Poll by two votes in a surprise late surge. South Carolina ‘08 has the results. John McCain: 164 Rudy Giuliani: 162 Duncan Hunter: 158 Sam Brownback: 85 Mitt Romney: 80 Mike Huckabee: 21 [...]

So my gut reaction to the early results:
Good for Giuliani (duh)…
Good for Hunter…
Bad for Romney (duh)…
Bad for McCain…
Something for Brownback….
Bad for Cox.
