There are rumors that Fred Thompson, the former Republican Senator from Tennessee, may seek the White House in 2008. Political Wire caught this post from Michael Silence of the Knoxville News-Sentinel:
The Fred Thompson rumors that he might run for president just keep on coming. Here’s part of an e-mail I just received from a good source of mine: “I am hearing that the Fred talk is more than distant rumbles. Of course there is no way of knowing how he will come down on it, but he apparently is looking.”
Political Wire added:
Fueling the rumors, were comments Thompson made on Mark Levin’s radio show earlier this week when the host asked him about his intentions. Thompson wouldn’t deny the rumor and said, “I’ll have more to say about that a little bit down the road.”
Thompson is known to swaths of American television audiences as Arthur Branch, the New York District Attorney on the NBC drama, Law & Order. Coincidentally, he had a bit part in one of my favorite films, The Hunt for the Red October. He appeared in the film rebutting Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11, Celsius 41.11 in 2004. (The subtitle of that film, “The Temperature at Which the Brain … Begins to Die,” however, is not true.)
The seat Thompson held from 1994 until 2003 was vacated by Al Gore. Wikipedia adds:
In the Republican primaries, he initially backed former Tennessee Gov. Lamar Alexander. On Alexander dropping out of the race Thompson endorsed Senator John McCain’s bid and became his national co-chairman.
And –
Thompson did voiceover work at the 2004 Republican National Convention. After the retirement of Supreme Court Associate Justice Sandra Day O’Connor in 2005, he was given an informal position by President George W. Bush to help guide the nominated John Roberts to the confirmation through the United States Senate.
He would be the second Thompson seeking the Republican nomination. In case you have forgotten, and polling shows that you have, former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson is running, too.

Something to say?

Ack, does every Republican have to mime Ronald Reagan in some way?
Mr. Thompson, I’ve seen all of Ronald Reagan’s films and you sir are no Ron Reagan.
