Yesterday the US Senate voted 60-38 to pass “S. 4, the bill “to make the United States more secure by implementing unfinished recommendations of the 9/11 Commission.” Shockingly the thirty-eight senators who voted against the bill and clearly hate America were all Republicans. Bob Geiger has the run-down of the roll-call, including which ten Republicans were patriotic enough to vote for the bill. Geiger cheekily notes, “I thought these guys liked to wave the flag and say they love America — what gives?”

Senators Sam Brownback and Chuck Hagel both voted against the homeland security bill. And John McCain? He was the only Republican - and only senatorial presidential candidate of either party - who skipped the vote. Geiger found out what McCain thought was more important than voting to defend America (well, based on his party’s positioning, McCain likely would have voted against defending America).

I knew there had to be a good reason that John McCain missed a critical vote on the 9/11 Commission recommendations in the Senate on Tuesday… I thought it might have been because he didn’t have the guts to go on the record and join 38 Republicans in opposing increased security for America — though that may still be part of it.

No, McCain decided it was more important to be way out in California for a series of big-money fundraisers on Tuesday than to be on Capitol Hill voting on the bill intended to “make the United States more secure by implementing unfinished recommendations of the 9/11 Commission to fight the war on terror more effectively.”

Geiger included a JPEG of McCain’s calendar for yesterday, which showed three fundraising events scheduled in California. You can view the schedule here.

McCain’s stock is falling. He needs his filthy lucre to keep his campaign afloat while the polls are bad and reports of internal strife with his staff abound. But skipping one of the most important votes of the session to hold three fundraisers is shameful. At least Brownback and Hagel had the courage to go on the record with their opposition to homeland security.

Of all the front runners, would you rate McCain’s as the worst run?

Yeah, you’d think with all the big names he’s hired, they would actually occasionally look like they know what they’re doing. Though that might be the problem - like the Phillies or the NY Rangers of the late nineties, too much star power means a lack of cohesion.

Or the Yankees of the last seven years. They’ll get ya to the playoffs (top-tier) but drop four games in a row to the BoSox (Giuliani?) and flirt with the idea of canning Torre (campaign staff quiting?)

[…] UPDATE II: It was easy to miss this one from yesterday. The 9/11 Commission Act passed the Senate yesterday by a vote of 60-38. Chuck Hagel was among the 38 Republicans who voted against the bill. […]

Something to say?
