I don't the GOP base, culturally as much as policy-wise, will allow McCain to communicate with the mainstream without punishing him. She cited his eloquent (and brave, considering his audience) defense of a path to citizenship as one of the things that elevated his performance above the others. Of course, that's also the thing that will turn him off to primary voters, so I guess by winning McCain really lost.
