Mitt Romney put his pandering skills to the test today at the National Right to Life convention in Kansas City, invoking Bush Senior, Henry Hyde, and Ronald Reagan as fellow converts to the cause, and insisting that “it is not time but conviction that unites us.”
The AP reports that Multiple-Choice Mitt’s speech “was interrupted several times by applause,” but the knives are out for Romney on abortion. Soren Dayton gives us Sam Brownback’s latest press release:
Mitt Romney: Proud of Taxpayer-Funded Abortions
Signed legislation forcing taxpayers to fund abortions as governor
The release attacks Romney for signing Massachusetts’s “Commonwealth Care” bill, which “forced taxpayers to pay for abortions and mandated that a member of the legislation’s policy board be appointed by Planned Parenthood,” and it includes quotes demanding Romney renounce the legislation.
Meanwhile Patrick Ruffini reports on the somewhat more underhanded side of the assault:
I just received an email from prolifefederation@gmail.com with an article questioning Romney’s pro-life bona-fides post conversion. Nor was this just any BCC job; they signed up for special email blast software, which means there’s lots of people on the list. Whatever this “Pro-Life Federation” is, there’s a good chance it was “founded” 15 minutes ago.
This fits the template of attacks on Romney seeming to pop up out of the blue.
So who’s sending these messages? Brownback’s campaign? Anonymous attendees at the Right to Life convention? McCain operatives? Ruffini’s money is on the last option: McCain’s people, he says, “have motive and opportunity”: it suits their interests to hit Romney on abortion, but not to be directly tied to the attacks.
Will McCain and Brownback keep their sights set on Romney, or will they expand their abortion assault to the putative frontrunner, Rudy Giuliani?
