Is John McCain listing phony fundraisers on his website? The Tampa Tribune reports that at least some of the events McCain’s campaign has been announcing never took place, and might not have ever even been planned:

The schedule on McCain’s web site showed him holding an event in St. Petersburg as well, but with no details on a time or place, and no such event took place. Several St. Pete GOP activists, including Pinellas County party chairman Tony DiMatteo, came to the Tampa event, and DiMatteo said he was never aware of any St. Pete event being planned.

McCain’s web site also showed an unspecified Pensacola event to be held Tuesday, which didn’t occur.

A campaign spokesman said no Pensacola or St. Pete events were ever planned.

So what exactly has McCain been doing with his time? Michael Link at Democrats.org has some guesses. The confusion is particularly noteworthy given McCain’s terrible fundraising so far — he’s been trying hard to suck up to Washington lobbyists and lawyers, but they don’t seem to want to donate to him. No matter how much he works to lower expectations, the fact is that the man who was once the heir-apparent now looks weaker by the day.

Something to say?
