For a party whose strategists seem to talk a lot about “the black vote” and “the hispanic vote,” Republicans don’t really seem to care much at all about actual black and hispanic voters. Two weeks after the entire GOP field save Duncan Hunter snubbed a major Hispanic leadership conference, our Republican friends offered the public another illustration of the depths of their commitment to reaching out beyond the party’s old, white, male base: of the nine candidates, only Tom Tancredo managed to show up to speak before the NAACP yesterday. Snubbing the country’s most venerable civil-rights organization? Perhaps the Republicans still aren’t ready to talk to America as it really is (as opposed to how Strom Thurmond would have liked it to be).
