Today is the second anniversary of the tragic levee failure after Hurricane Katrina that led to the flooding of New Orleans and the death of thousands. Clearly, this is a layup for Presidential candidates. You pay tribute to the city and highlight your plans for reconstruction, as John Edwards and Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have done.
So what have the Republican candidates worked up for this anniversary?
Rudy Giuliani: Three-line press release, no specifics.
Mitt Romney: Nothing on the front page.
Fred Thompson: Nothing on the front page.
John McCain: Three-paragraph press release, no specifics.
Mike Huckabee: Nothing on the front page, at the top of the site is a news flash that “Gov. Mike Huckabee to Participate in the New Hampshire Republican Presidential Debate on September 5, 2007.”
Sam Brownback: Nothing on the front page.
Duncan Hunter: To his credit, Hunter was the only Republican to attend the “Hope and Recovery Summit” in New Orleans on Tuesday, and he writes about it. The story accentuates the positives, but at least he offers a tribute and some specifics.
Ron Paul: Nothing on the front page.
Tom Tancredo: Nothing on the front page.
John Cox: Nothing on the front page.
It’s not a scientific study, but it does offer at least a glimpse into the priorities of the Right’s Field. The citizens of the Gulf Coast and New Orleans aren’t on the top of the list.

I think something here has to be said about this Katrina situation..
Billons of dollars from the American people have poured into New Orleans, only to be squandered and wasted by the corrupt mayor Ray Nagen and his cohorts. Its time for the people in New Orleans to rid the city of corruption and stand up and do what needs to be done!
hey dave, if you can find any quote where rudy claimed to be a rescue worker i will give you a million bucks.
and if you can provide any evidence what so ever to the claim that rudy sprinkle dust from the towers onto himself i would love to see it.
in liberal land: launching campaign from 9th ward when you dont live in the 9th ward, new orleans, or louisiana = A OK!!!
attending a memorial for many or your friends and coworkers, a memorial you have attended for 6 years, a memorial you were invited to, eeeeeeeevil explotation.
the left’s fear of giuliani’s electability is incredible.
funny the democrats are talking about plans to rebuild the gulf coast, but democrats have complete control over the city of new orleans and the state of louisana, yet its somehow the republicans fault that blanco and negan continue to fail their people, amazing…
i wonder if edwards will appear with ray nagan and kathleen blanco…somehow i doubt it.
I’ll take that bet, lower case matt:
“This is not a mayor or a governor or a president who’s sitting in an ivory tower,” he said. “I was at ground zero as often, if not more, than most of the workers. … I was there working with them. I was exposed to exactly the same things they were exposed to. So in that sense, I’m one of them.“
Here it is in video, if you don’t believe me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wR8SPSA7ygA
I prefer small, unmarked bills. Thanks.
Bush stood in Jackson Square and pledged over $200 billion in federal dollars that was eventually squandered away with poor management at the federal (read: executive branch, i.e., Republican president and a slew of Republican operatives holding professional positions) level during a Republican Congress (legislative branch).
oreeetaggaaa,
‘i am one of them’ as in ‘ i am one of the people exposed to harmful chemicals in the air’. he even said ‘in that sense’ as in being at the site and breathing the same air, but the clowns opperating this site lack all sense, so that went right over their heads.
matt ortega has failed to find a single quote in rudy giuliani’s entire public career where he claimed to be a first responder or rescue worker.
ill be waiting for that ‘ i, rudolph giulaini, am a first responder’ quote that this site claims exists….
and if you can tell me at what time john edwards lived in or worked in the 9th ward, justifying his launch from that spot. having no familia roots in the area it is clear that edwards’ launch was entirely exploitative of the katrina victims of the 9th ward.
the president stood there, with no strings attached, and said ill fix it. edwards stood there and said ill help fix it, only if you vote for me, if you dont ill go back to my 30,000 sq ft mansion.
perhaps a class on states’ rights would help you orteeeega, unless you would like to claim here on your site that democrats ray nagan and kathleen blanco have been stellar in their rebuilding of their own city and community. i think blance was espeacially democratic when she ordered the national guard to shoot looters on sit on sept. 1, 2005, way to go liberals!!! now thats democrat compassion for katrina victims right there!
matt,
I think the point is that Rudy Giuliani is saying that because he was near the Twin Towers when they fell on 9/11 that he is somehow now the most qualified to protect the United States against terrorism. That, my friend is exploitation.
Did John Edwards say that because he has been to New Orleans and seen the damage that he is somehow now the most qualified to protect the United States against hurricanes? No. He has offered a plan to rebuild the city and reinforce the levies. Also, curbing global warming will help.
You also still refuse to address the 29 hours at ground zero issue..
Wow, lower case matt, I am speechless at the intellectual dishonesty in your latest comment.
Previous comments I could chalk up to you just believing right-wing spin but this? Denial incontrovertible evidence right before your eyes? Wow, that’s an all-time low for you, my friend.
Just an FYI. I attended the Hope and Recovery Summit and Huckabee was there and presented a speech.
noah, it was rudy’s leadership, his calming attitude, his unflinching resolve, his confident speeches, and reassuring press briefings that helped up through 9/11, showing everyone how a president should handle a crisis. standing near the towers is not the point, and shows how ridiculous criticism of that is. it was how he acted and what he said that mattered, not how close he was to the buildings.
orteeeega, you know for a fact rudy was talking about his common exposure with rescue workers, and at no time did he say he was digging in the pile himself, to suggest that is what he meant is truly dishonest, and shows that smearing and mud slinging out weights true facts in your world.
the only all time low is the fact this site still exists, but come next november, we can turn this page into the president rudy fansite.
lower case matt — what’s the deal with you mocking my last name? You’re not going all Dan Riehl on me are ya?
Something to say?

so rudy goes to ny on 9/11 and its wrong because he is a candidate and according to this site that is politcizing a tragic event, yet the dems exploiting katrina is ok? giuliani was an actual 9/11 victim who was there, who lost friends and coworkers, who knows what its like to choke on the dust of the fallen towers. he has every right to be there. jon edwards, however, exploiting the 9th ward to launch his presidential campaign, and the continued exploitation of katrina victims by democrats goes on without a mention by a site like this, and the other liberal hords who a blinded by the thickness of their own hypocrisy. giuliani was a victim of 9/11, were obama, clinton, edwards direct victims of katrina? another tragic low for the democrats, showing they will exploit anyone and anything to satisfy their lust for power.
