Despite the Romney camp’s denials, Fred Thompson’s campaign is claiming that the former Massachusetts governor’s organization was indeed behind PhoneyFred.org, the now-defunct attack site:

“Today’s half-baked cover-up attempt by the Romney campaign does not even pass the laugh test,” Todd Harris, Thompson’s communications director, said in a prepared statement.

Earlier in the day, Harris indicated the campaign would wait until the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks passed before commenting on the matter. A few hours later he issued the statement.

“The Romney campaign has paid Warren Tompkins and his various firms hundreds of thousands of dollars,” Harris said.

“Wesley Donehue works for Tompkins and is listed on Tompkins’ own Web page as an associate of the firm.”

A Romney spokesman again denied the campaign’s involvement — and hit back at Thompson for launching a political counter-attack on 9/11.

Soren Dayton elaborates on Donehue’s connections to the Romney campaign. While it’s technically true that Donehue is not on Romney’s payroll, his firm for whom he runs “web-based ventures” — is.

Dayton notes:

So it sounds like these phony websites are a Romney modus operandi. And they threw a staffer, a deputy, under the bus when he was just executing company policy. Seems like there’s a little more accountability for this, doesn’t it?

Once again, the politically amoral Romney doesn’t seem to mind having shady supporters or dirty tricks done on his behalf, as long as he can stab someone in the back when it becomes politically necessary.

Romney gets caught in one day. While Rudy has been pulling it off for two months. That says a lot. Am I the only one following his online stealth campaign? Some of the ads are quite funny, I must say. I especially like the anti-Thompson one. Here’s the link. http://youtube.com/watch?v=qxu1Yoi50BY

romney’s support is dissolving, thompson will drown romney out, and it will boil down to fred against rudy. but with freds abortion lobbying and his admitting he doesnt go to church, i doubt evengelicals will really flock to him. combine that with the fact he will be shredded by rudy in a debate, and it all leads to a giuliani win. fred would make a nice token vp, with nowhere near the influence of cheney however.

matt, you think evangelicals will flock to Rudy because of his support of abortion rights and gay rights?

Something to say?
