Florida has been a total disaster for FDT.
Apparently, Fred Thompson didn’t know possible oil drilling in the Everglades is a big issue in Florida.
Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson seemed taken by surprise when asked Tuesday about oil drilling in the Everglades, apparently unaware it’s been a major Florida issue.
Before answering, he laughed at the question.
“Gosh, no one has told me that there’s any major reserves in the Everglades, but maybe that’s one of the things I need to learn while I’m down here,” Thompson said after talking over state issues with Gov. Charlie Crist. [emphasis added]
Just as an FYI to FDT before he comes out to California: offshore drilling is a big deal here, too.
Remember, this guy is breaking his way into the top-tier of Republican candidates.

I’m surprised Freddie even knew that he was in Florida at the time. Poor guy.
I think Thompson may yet prove a valuable addition to the GOP field, if he proves willing to attack Rudy from the right. It seems to me that Huckabee is too invested in his nice guy image, and may even be too nice a guy, to launch any real attacks on Rudy over social issues, and Mitt will be willing to attack but may be too compromised by his own flip-flops to do any damage. If Thompson can actually raise any money, he might spend it on ads that, even if they don’t derail Rudy’s campaign for the nomination, will help split the party and keep evangelicals at home in the general election.
you can dream sleep thief, but dont count on it, evangelicals would show up for jane roe if she was running against hillary clinton.
I wonder. Karl Rove still believes that they stayed home in the hundreds of thousands due to revelations about Bush’s drunk driving in the last week of the 2000 election. And that’s just one bad decision not a lifetime of committed progressive stances. The problem is it’s very hard to poll — there’s no screen for “normally likely voters who might neverthless decide to stay home”, and the only quantitative proxy is expressed enthusiasm for the candidate. It’s very hard to translate that number into a number of those with an actual intention not to vote, but as we know enthusiasm among that constituency for a Giuliani candidacy is very low. And the polls also suggest their knowledge of his positions is low as well. A bit of negative advertising may do wonders.
hillary clinton is the most polarizing person in the country. she starts out with nearly 50% saying they will NEVER vote for her. giuliani has already been hit with every from abortion to gay rights to his family issues and he still leads. and lets not pretend that there aren’t plenty of skeletons in the clinton closet to be dragged into ad after ad after ad.
staying home over a bush DUI is something that wouldnt happen in a post 9/11 election. many religious voters and values voters rank the war against islamic extremists as being more important then abortion.
despite non-stop msm negative attacks against rudy, despite non-stop ass-kissing of the democrat candidates, despite a complete one sided perception in print and online, rudy is still tying or beating clinton in the majority of polls. the gop hasn’t even started in on her yet.
and polls really dont tell the whole story, its the electoral map that makes dems fear rudy and laugh at thompson.
thompson is generic republican empty suit, he will lose ohio which is trending blue, probably arkansas, and maybe colorado. clinton would have to hold the kerry states and she wins easy.
against rudy, it changes dramatically. the south is actually pretty strong for rudy, and clinton is loathed. rudy is leading in ohio, nj, and pa. he is in within single digits in ny, and just a few points back in michigan, conn., and minnesota. point is, rudy keeps the dems back on their heels, trying to hang onto kerry states, instead of making inroads in the midwest and southwest, as was their strategy going up against an allen-type(who was the percieved frontrunner before macca). giuliani flips it upsidedown, and he is just as ruthless and cunning as the clintons. would be something to see.
Since Fred is only making a few stops a day what does he do with all that time on the bus? I would think he would be studing the issues, being briefed by his staff.
Maybe he uses the time to catch up on his rest. What was he doing all last month?
[...] … that there’s oil in the Everglades. [...]
Something to say?

thompson’s entry all but seals rudy’s win.
