When you hold your meeting in secret you are being secretive. While they may be publicity hounds individually they apparently didn't want this cat out of the bag until and unless they came to a consensus.

"It’s true that they could throw the election to the Democrats by winning only a couple of percentage points next November. But what will that win them?"

The Christian conservatives are the foot soldiers of the party, the true backbone. The big money guys will throw cash at whoever they think will win hoping to buy influence. You're saying Republicans can win (or lose by a little) with less money than they're used to and without their campaign volunteers. The CC will be bale to say afterward, "You lost your way. Without us the Republican party is nothing." And they'll be right.

While I of course would whole-heartedly support a wing-nut third party challenge (for purely democratic reasons of course -- the public debate is so much richer for the participation of many different voices other than that of Ralph Nader) I just don't understand their thinking here. Don't they HAVE a potential candidate in Huckabee? He seems like a long-shot right now, but surely less so than someone they throw into the primaries at the last minute, let alone into the general election. And if these guys all got behind Huckabee in a public and vocal way, it could give him a big surge, especially as Thompson tanks. Huckabee has done something very wrong in his outreach. Did the CFG and the anti-tax people manage to undermine him so thoroughly that the Christian right decided they couldn't support him either?
