Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani weighed in on why the Republicans were blown out in the 2006 midterm elections. Rudy’s verdict: spending.

“We lost control of Congress because we were just like the Democrats as far as spending is concerned – shame on us,” Giuliani told the anti-tax group Americans for Prosperity.

It is messaging that the Romney camp says Giuliani stole from the former governor. Giuliani continued:

Giuliani quipped that “Republicans are amateur spenders, and Democrats are professional spenders.”

That answer prompted The November Blog’s Noah to quip:

Ok, so we should elect amateurs instead of professionals?

Noah offered his own campaign slogan for Rudy, feel free to post yours in the comments.

The amateurs are in charge.

Flashback: Fred Thompson categorically denied the Iraq War cost the Republicans in 2006, and included “out-of-control” spending among his list of reasons.
