Senator John McCain managed to insult himself and the Arizona Diamondbacks, down three games to none to the red-hot Colorado Rockies in the National League Championship Series, all in the same breath.
McCain, R-Ariz, was a guest on The Dan Patrick Show Monday, when Patrick asked McCain for some political and sports prognostication.
“Who has a better chance,” Patrick asked McCain, “you to be president or Arizona to go to the World Series?”
McCain laughed, “Well, in all due respect,” he said, “I think they’re about the same.”
What does that mean? [emphasis added]
To answer ABC News’ Bret Hovell’s question, it is to say McCain has zero chance of being president. At least, that’s how I read it.
Why?
There has only been one team to have ever come back from down three games in the Major League Baseball playoffs: the 2004 Boston Red Sox.
The most optimistic and generous McCain observers would make analogies between the Arizona senator’s recent performances in the Republican presidential debates and BoSox designated hitter David Ortiz’s clutch hitting in the 2004 ALCS against the deeply-hated New York Yankees.
But at this stage of the game, it is going to take more than a strong performance in a blood-soaked sock to bring McCain within striking distance of advancing to the general election.
