Nelson Warfield quit from his position as a media consultant for Fred Thompson’s fledgling campaign.
Mr. Warfield, a hard-edged conservative adviser who is known for producing sharp-elbow advertisements, said that he decided to step aside after “it became clear that the media team didn’t have room for my approach to advertising,” a reference to the team of media advisers Mr. Thompson is putting together.
“Consultants come and go,” he said. “And I decided it was time for this one to go.”
But the New York Times‘ Adam Nagourney writes that Warfield’s departure may prove to be “significant” and great news for the Giuliani campaign.
Mr. Warfield is best known in Republican circles for having been the spokesman for Bob Dole, the former Kansas senator, when he ran for president against Bill Clinton in 1996. But before that, Mr. Warfield was an adviser to Ron Lauder when he fought Rudolph W. Giuliani for the Republican mayoral nomination in New York City in 1989. Mr. Lauder lost but that race left Mr. Warfield with a wealth of information about the political record of Mr. Giuliani that could be gleaned from some of Mr. Thompson’s recent jabs at Mr. Giuliani (such as mentioning that Mr. Giuliani twice ran as the Liberal Party candidate for mayor of New York.) Something to say?

Sigh. I had hoped Thompson’s function in this race might be to attack Rudy from the right. Maybe if Huckabee can raise some money he’ll do it. If not, Hillary should bite the bullet and hire this guy.
