I started watching about halfway through the interview, so that’s all that’s below. Note to readers: throat-clearings were not included.

He had some great comments on how he’d be ok with waterboarding but wasn’t willing to say it was torture. Great.

Channeling Rumsfeld now on Iraq/Iran… We go to war with the intelligence we have, not the intelligence we’d like to have.

Virginia Tech tragedy… Thompson quote on need for having guns. …Seems to be walking it back–need to be consistent with school and state rules.

Russert provides 2004 GOP platform on abortion. Thompson asked about Human Life Amendment, says he would not support it–Federalism. Hopes Roe v. Wade will one day be overturned and let the states decide. Not a constitutional amendment.

Now Russert asks about 1994 interview where he said he didn’t want to criminalize abortion because he didn’t know when life began. Now, “I didn’t know where life began THEN.” wink wink, nod nod. Russert: “And you do now?” Shorter Thompson: yes. …Now touting his anti-abortion cred as a senator. … Says seeing sonogram of now-4 year old, “it changed my heart … I think life begins as conception.” says he was a dad when he was young, but was busy then. very busy.

Gay marriage–would be ok if state said it was ok. But also would support constitutional amendment. But would also be ok if a governor and state legislature allowed it. Gotta love that federalism.

Now the Schiavo case. Would leave it up to family/doctor. Says the federal government shouldn’t have gotten involved. He seems to have remembered the case now (but at least he’s on the right side of the issue).

Russert asks about Thompson’s adviser/drug dealer (See: http://rightsfield.com/2007/11.....earthe d/). Says Phillip Martin will stay with campaign. Hasn’t had a chance to talk to Phil yet. … “When Phil was in his 20s, these things came about… I know Phil is a good man. He’s my friend. He’ll stay a friend.” Gonna have to talk to Phil.

Russert asks about Thompson’s weight loss. “Is it health related?” YIKES! Thompson says no. Russert brings up Thompson’s diagnosis of lymphoma. Had tests. “100 percent free and clear.” …says other candidates have had illnesses. Will he release all his health records? “I’ll do what’s common and appropriate.”

The end.

Russert says both Giuliani and Romney have been invited and have pledged to come on the show before the Iowa caucuses. Russert seems skeptical.

Let’s have some sympathy for Fred here. Federalism is a really really confusing philosophy. It holds that the federal government should leave all major decisions to the states, except (as in cases like Bush v Gore, Lawrence and Garner v. Texas, or Gonzales v Oregon) when it shouldn’t. It’s hard to blame some of its proponents for losing the thread now and again.

Something to say?
